The Rathaus (City Hall of Wien) was built between 1872 and 1883 in the Gothic style by Friedrich von Schimdt. At the top of the 97.9-metre-high steeple is the statue of the Rathausmann, cast from melted-down Russian kopecks. The statue of a medieval knight was modelled on the armour of Emperor Maximilian I.
